Kit Fisto- Mon Calamari conflict during Clone Wars
KIT FISTO Jedi Master- Clone Wars Miniseries from Cartoon Network
This time I wanna work on a new custom figure. As the title stated, this is a figured based on the Master Jedi apperance in the Catoon Network Miniseries from 2003. In this chapter Kit Fisto leads an army of Scuba troopers against the Quarren Isolation Link. Reference Pic:Motivation:
In 2003 Hasbro released a figure based on this apperance. Figure Review on the link below.

Despite the figure is quite decent, unlike the 5 POA´s (yes, as you may know, I hate them… LOL) It is still has a lack of articulation. Therefore the 2 major issues for the collectors:
1. The head sculpt look ok, but it isn´t the latest and more "accurate" sculpt from Hasbro line->
I would like to have the Head sculpt based of his appearance in the Revenge of the Sith and not the "Baby Ajolote look" from the 2003 Figure above mentioned. That´s why I´m going to utilize the one from The Vintage collection.
Right: 2003 Clone Wars Head/ Left: 2008 TVC Head |
Then, since this Fisto suppose to be a swimming version of the jedi Master, suppose to be fully articulated.
So I´m going to tackle both points mentioned above.
Procedure
1. Head sculpt
First I duplicate with a putty mold the face of the headsculpt and cast a resin on it. The result is shown:
During the curing process of the resin I embedded the female part of a 7mm of diameter of a Hobby Base (c) ball joint:
The rear part of the headsculpt was made with Sculpey and then oven it the complete head to get the final piece to be molded.
When the Master is ready, prime it to seal the pores and mount the mold. Here is important to highlight that, since this head sculpt is quite complex due to the amount of tentacles the best way to mol it is to put the head upside down lefting the tentacles pointing up, and each tentacle should have its own way out to material in the mold. Another thing is the fact that since the tentacles are long and brittle (Sculpey is not specially though material) when demolding I had to break them :(
A silicon mold here is definitively compulsory, otherwise demolding the tentacles is going to be an imposible task.
Well, now, it is time to test the mold and make try outs. In my case I had to make almost 10 try outs to finally had a final mold with the right way-out cut outs.
For the casting I used a PUR resin which is flexible (for the tentacles). This time I didn't use a Smooth-On product but an A70 Shore flexible resin from a local supplier.

Since the pot life is only 10 mins injection of the material is recommended because it takes to much time for the material to fill each tentacle cavity. To spare painting as well I tinted it in a flesh-green color. After 12 Hrs of curing time here is the result:
Top view of the mold showing all the way outs of the material (I numbered them to control the filling up of each tentacle).
The final casting demolded.
After trimming the burs, and applying the paintwork we have the final head sculpt:
